FT | School begins with flood | 26/01/12

School begins with flood

IT is sad to hear and read about the floods in the Western Division.
I urge parents to ensure safety of their children and the back to school material they have bought.
Just a thought for the Education Ministry - would be so dreadful if we began the school year in the second week of February?
Surely we can conclude the school year in the second week of December to compensate for the appropriate number of weeks required by teachers to complete syllabus and conduct exams.
It was very disheartening to hear that it is up to the parents to decide whether they want to send their children to school or not.
Also let us not forget that many schools are being utilised as evacuation centres. How then are students expected to study if their classrooms are occupied by distressed families?
It would mean a great deal to us if the Education Ministry considered this plight.
